What is Alpha?
Unpack the big questions together.
Alpha is a series of evenings where people from every background get together to explore life, faith and meaning in a relaxed, friendly setting. It runs in churches, cafés and living rooms all over the world — millions of people have tried it.
Every week looks the same: you eat, you watch a short film that opens up one big question, and then you talk about it in a small group. That's it. There's no homework, and nobody's keeping score.

A 25-minute film that opens up one big question: Is there more to life than this? Who is Jesus? Why pray?

Your small group, same faces every week. Say what you actually think. Disagree. Ask the awkward question.

Holy Spirit Weekend
Friday November 6 – Saturday November 7
Part-way through, the whole group spends a Friday evening and Saturday together. It's the highlight of Alpha for a lot of people — more time, more conversation, and a few sessions on the Holy Spirit.

Things people ask before they come

Do I need to be Catholic — or religious at all?
No. Alpha is for anyone who's curious: people of any faith or none, lapsed Catholics, the sceptical, the searching. It's hosted by our parish, but it isn't a class in being Catholic. Bring your questions.
Will I be put on the spot?
Never. You can say as much or as little as you like. Nobody will ask you to read, pray, or answer anything you'd rather not. Plenty of people just listen for the first few weeks.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Dinner included. There's no collection and nothing to buy.
Do I have to commit to all eleven weeks?
Come to the first night on September 22 and see what you think. If it isn't for you, no hard feelings. If you miss a week later on, just come back the next — every session stands on its own.
Can I bring someone?
Please do. The registration form has a spot for a companion's name so you're seated together.
Is there childcare?
Not this fall, unfortunately. We hope to offer it for the winter course. If that's the only thing keeping you away, let the office know — it helps us plan.

I can't do Tuesdays in Truro.
Our parish is also running Alpha at St. Bridget's Church, Shubenacadie, September 11 – November 20, 2026. The same registration form lets you pick either location.
